This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a intense contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
